SPF and Why It’s So Important!

Have you ever wondered why we’ve always been told SPF is so important to wear? SPF protects us from damaging UV rays. Incorporating using SPF daily will prevent signs of aging, reduce the risk of sunburn, reduce inflammation, reduce your risk of skin cancer, and prevent skin discoloration.

There are two types of sunscreens: mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens absorb and dissipate UV rays from the sun. The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens can be irritating or cause discomfort. Mineral sunscreens sit on your face and act like a barrier to reflect the sun away from your body. They do not allow the UV rays to be absorbed like chemical sunscreens do. Mineral sunscreens also provide immediate protection unlike chemical sunscreens which take 20-30 minutes to absorb into the skin.

When choosing a sunscreen we always recommend only using mineral sunscreens that have zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in it. Always choose SPF 30 or higher to ensure you are fully protecting your skin and reapplying throughout the day.
